Daniel Chester "Dip" Cannon: A Lifetime of Devotion

Daniel Chester Cannon (1915–2005), affectionately known as "Dip," was a cornerstone of the Quinlan community whose 37 years of service on the QISD Board of Trustees helped guide the district through its most significant eras of growth. His lifelong commitment to the children of Quinlan is honored through the naming of D.C. Cannon Elementary School.

Educational Leadership and Service

Mr. Cannon’s leadership spanned the transformation of Quinlan ISD from a small 1A district into a large 3A district. He served on the Gooseneck Board of Trustees until common schools consolidated to create the modern Quinlan ISD, at which point he became a member of the QISD Board of Trustees.

  • Board Excellence: He served 37 years as a QISD Board Trustee, with the majority of that time spent as Board President.
  • District Growth: Alongside leaders like W.H. Ford and C.B. Thompson, he navigated the exponential student growth brought on by the creation of Lake Tawakoni in the 1970s and 1980s.
  • Dedicated Honor: Quinlan Elementary was reorganized and renamed in his honor to recognize his nearly four decades of service to the school system in 1980.
  • Hall of Fame: In 2009, he was inducted into the QISD Hall of Fame for his enduring commitment to education.

Professional and Personal Journey

Born in the Gooseneck Community north of Quinlan, Mr. Cannon was a man of the land and a dedicated public servant:

  • The Nickname "Dip": He earned his nickname at age three from his sister, Pearl, because he couldn't wait each day for someone to read him his favorite comic strip, "Dipsy-Do".
  • Athletic Prowess: In high school, he was an avid basketball and baseball player. Notably, he was one of the only players in the county who could successfully hit against the famous MLB pitcher Monty Stratton.
  • Public Service: Concurrent with his school board service, he worked for Hunt County Precinct 3 for 30 years, where he was instrumental in the planning and construction of many county roads. He also served as a deputy for Sheriff Red Woods for four years.

Community and Civic Impact

Mr. Cannon was known for bringing light—literally and figuratively—to the Quinlan area:

  • Holiday Tradition: Throughout the holiday season, Mr. Cannon and his wife brought cheer to the community by hosting the largest Christmas light display in the entire area.
  • Faith and Family: A lifetime member and leader of the First United Methodist Church of Quinlan, he was married to Lillian Odell Strickland for 69 years. Interestingly, they were married in the same month and year as their lifelong friends, Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Butler. They raised their children in Quinlan, all of whom graduated from QISD.

D.C. Cannon was devoted to his family, his community, and the schools in which he served.
